3 things drivers say to charge you more, and what to say back
These are documented patterns, not guesses — reported independently by tourist advisories, local news, and a viral video that pushed the city to reform taxi pricing in the first place.
Pattern 1
"The meter's broken"
Marrakech taxis haven't run on a meter for airport pickups since the December 2023 reform — fares are fixed by zone at the single-window taxi stand, not calculated live. A driver claiming a broken meter is setting up to negotiate a number well above the zone fare, banking on you not knowing there's no meter to begin with.
Pattern 2
"Fixed price only, no other option"
There genuinely is a fixed price — that's the whole point of the reform. The scam version of this line quotes a number 2–3× the real zone fare and presents it as non-negotiable, hoping you don't have the actual table to check against. This is exactly why the fare table matters as a reference, not just trivia.
Pattern 3
An unofficial driver waves you over before the taxi rank
Official taxis queue at the marked single-window stand inside or just outside the terminal. Drivers who intercept arriving passengers before that point — in the arrivals hall, at the exit doors — are typically not part of the regulated queue, and the fixed-fare protections don't apply to whatever price they quote. This pattern is the one that produced the viral video that triggered the 2023 reform in the first place.
